Date: Wed, 15 Mar 95 15:13:24 -0500 From: Thomas A. Miller To: tmiller@cimmeria.oit.gatech.edu Subject: Adventurers survey I got started thinking about if I could make a movie out of the stories. I know, I know, I should worry about writing 238, not some silly survey, but I can't get this idea out of my mind. What I'm after is this: which actors and actresses would you associate with the adventurers, given an unlimited budget? And yes, it's okay to name dead actors, if that's who you envision as a particular adventurer... Reply, and I promise I'll try my best to get the Adventurers movie project going! :) Alindyar Arnold Belphanior Bosco Ged Gorin Halbarad Lyra Mongo Nenya Otto Peldor Peyote Rillen Rob Thanks for your attention, Thomas Date: Thu, 16 Mar 95 14:02:28 -0500 From: Thomas A. Miller To: Subject: update on movie casting call Summary of the Adventurers casting call responses: (some suggestors' justifications included) Alindyar Suggested were: Malcolm McDowell, Robert Guillome, Tom Hanks, Johnny Depp, Anthony Hopkins, Rutger Hauer, Michael Praed (Robin Hood in the BBC series), a young Vincent Price, Sir John Gielguid: intelligence and elegance personified, David Niven; awe-inspiringly smart, powerful - Lt. Fancy from NYPD Blue. (Art ?) Tough call. Arnold Suggested were: Arnold Schwarzenegger (13), Dolph Lungdren (2) or any wrestler, Johnny Weismueller (Tarzan, many years ago), Stallone (because Swartzenegger's too smart to be able to remain acting that stupid for so long...with Stallone, that problem won't arise); another person suggested Stallone, since he and Arnold always take cheap shots at one another in their movies; Jeff Fahey Okay, this one should've been a no-brainer...shame on the rest of you! Our hero Arnold can only really be played by Arnold S. himself. Belphanior Suggested were: Rutger Hauer (3), Alan Rickman (2), Steven Seagal, Jack Nicholson, Willem Dafoe, Anthony Hopkins, Sting, Christopher Walken w/James Earl Jones' voice, Val Kilmer, Michael Biehn, Clint Eastwood, Charlie Sheen Hmm. Though several of those are good choices, I tend to favor Rutger Hauer. He's one mean SOB when he wants to be...just like Belphanior. Bosco Suggested were: Danny Devito (3), a squished Robin Williams (2), a squished Michael McKean, David ? from "The Wizard" voice of Parrot in Aladdin, Joe Pesci, McAuley Culkin, Groucho Marx, any of the Baldwin brothers, Christian Slater I think a shortened Joe Pesci or Danny Devito would do the job here. I lean slightly toward Joe Pesci. Ged Harrison Ford (2), Sean Connery (2), James Woods, Kenneth Branaugh, Michael J. Fox, Richard Burton (voice), Emilio Estevez, Yul Brynner, Tim Robbins, Charlton Heston, David Niven, Michael Douglas It seems that most people wanted actors of distinction to play Ged, actors with a lot of screen presence and charisma. Remember, though, Ged is young-looking, slim - an elf. That makes the decision much tougher. Gorin Suggested were: Danny Devito, Kurt Russell, bulked-up Michael J. Fox. I'm not sure if it really matters. I'd favor Danny Devito over the other two. I don't think Michael J. Fox could grow a beard. Halbarad Suggested were: Kevin Costner (2), Mark Hamill, Christopher Lambert, Rutger Hauer, Cheech, Nick Brimble (Little John from "Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves"), Clint Eastwood, Patrick Stewart, Sean Connery, Pierce Brosnan Several of you said that Costner has the same detached yet efficient personality as Halbarad, and I believe I agree. Lyra Suggested were: Halle Berry (2), Julia Roberts, Michelle Pfeiffer, Anne Archer, Linda Hamilton, Grace Jones, Virginia Mayo, Meryl Streep Most of you pointed out that Lyra's actress would have to be somebody slim, sexy, even slinky - but also able to act. Michelle Pfeiffer? Mongo Suggested were: a squished Sean Connery, Robert DeNiro (2), a squished Brian Blessed (Robin's father in the most recent movie, he was also in _Flash Gordon_ as the king of the hawkmen), Stallone, a stronger Danny Devito, Davey Smith (the British Bulldog from WWF - hey they can act!), shrunken Arnold (2), Mel Gibson, Peter Lorre Watch _Flash Gordon_ and then _Robin Hood_ - Brian Blessed is loud, he's crude, he's tough, he's got the beard. Now we just have to figure out how to shrink him. Nenya Suggested were: Darryl Hannah, Enya, Sharon Stone, Linda Hamilton, Uma Thurman, Kate Bush, Kate Hepburn, Nastassia Kinski, Sigourney Weaver, Lauren Bacall, Kristy Swanson I'd have to go with Ged's player's suggestion here, since it's his henchperson: Uma Thurman. Otto Suggested were: a squished Jack Elam (2), Gary Busey, Charlie Sheen Guess the squished Jack Elam wins... Peldor Suggested were: Robin Williams (2), Pierce Brosnan (2), Matthew Broderick (2) (apparently from his role in _Ladyhawke_), Errol Flynn, Harrison Ford. Kurt Russell, Kevin Kline, Tom Hanks, Eddie Murphy, Richard Greico, Emilio Estevez, Oliver Platt Opinions here seemed to differ. Some people saw Peldor as a dashing action hero, others saw him as a comedian. Definitely a tough call; Marc (the player) once likened Peldor to a young Harrison Ford, a la the _Star Wars_ era. I bet Val Kilmer could pull it off, though. Peyote Suggested were: Keanu Reeves (3), Val Kilmer, David Crosby, Peter O'Toole (able to play a drunkard well), Steve Martin, Tommy Chong, Howard Hesseman, Harald Juhnke (a German actor), Donald Sutherland, Keifer Sutherland, Sir Ralph Richardson, Pauly Shore I have to agree with the majority here - today's bulked-up Keanu Reeves (but with his late-80s "dude" dialect) is the man for the job. Rillen Suggested were: Michael Dorn, Wesley Snipes (5), Van Damme (2), Morgan Freeman, Louis Gossett, Jr., Shaqille O'Neal, the black guy from Spenser For Hire or Cyborg, Michael Jordan, Geoffrey Holder (played Baron Samedi in Live_and_Let_Die), Humphrey Bogart, Jesse Ventura Hmm. If Michael Dorn's tall enough and muscular enough, he'd get the job. Wesley's a little bit shorter than Rillen should be, I think. The character was originally based on Van Damme, and I suspect that Dolph Lungdren (at 6'5" and with real martial arts experience) would work as well. Of course, they'd need a bit of makeup. Then again, there's always Shaq, or Michael Jordan... Rob Suggested were: Tom Arnold (2), Emilio Estevez, Sean Connery, Danny Devito, James Earl Jones (as he appeared in "Grim Prairie Tales"), Robin Williams, Rick Moranis, Jerry Lewis, Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Rowan Atkinson 'Mr. Bean','Black Adder', Tom Cruise, Martin Short My god...Rick Moranis! Perfect! Aside from my original list, these were also suggested, so I'll address them: Tanya Suggested was: Iman I don't know who the heck Iman is, but I do know this: The Tanya character was designed by Peldor and myself, and she was based on Tanya Roberts, in her redhead days (_Beastmaster_)...I'm afraid this one's not open for discussion; when you think Tanya, think Tanya. Zara Suggested was: Mia Sara Sure, why not? ...and special guest star Ernest Borgnine as Flint! One person suggested that the movie be an animated movie, that way real actors don't have to be involved. Realistically, this would be the only way to do it, since I don't anticipate $100M coming in from any sponsor or studio... At this point, the following are still somewhat unsure, at least in my mind: Alindyar, Ged, Lyra, Peldor, Rillen. Here are a few more that I've thought about: Baron Albert DONALD SUTHERLAND Belgar Belvor IV (king of Furyondy) SEAN CONNERY Bruce BRUCE LEE Chuck CHUCK NORRIS Cynder (voice) Deryck KIEFER SUTHERLAND Garn (RIP) EDWARD JAMES OLMOS Garth Gorath of Krynn TOMMY LEE JONES Igor (RIP) Ilivarra Dalael (RIP) Jerrod Kalu Kiel Morgan LANCE HENRIKSEN Krug (RIP) Kubala Kup Swiftfoot Lao Khan (RIP) AL LEONG?
